Summary: |
One Quaternary soil sample from the Olkiluoto research pit OL-KK26 was studied for its mineralogy, focused on its carbonate and sulphide concentrations. The study is based on size and density classified subsamples. Mineral distributions were determined by a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), using AZtec and INCA Feature phase detection and classification software. Lithologies within the cobble fraction are also measured. Carbonates and sulfide concentrations of the sample are low. Carbonates and phosphates occur in the sedimentary rock fragments forming a matrix enveloping the other detrital mineral grains, like quartz and sulfides. Sulphide is predominately pyrite. Pyrite occurs as liberated grains and as inclusions in granitic and sedimentary rock particles. |
