THE NATURE INVENTORY IN OLKILUOTO (EURAJOKI COMMUN, SOUTH-
WEST FINLAND) IN 1997
ABSTRACT

The aim of the project is to carry out the basic information for environmental impact
assessment (EIA), which begun in the 1997. The main goal is to mitigate or prevent the
harmful impacts of the construction and maintenance of the final repository of the
nuclear waste for the nature values and recreational use in the study area.

The study area (about 8 km2) is situated at the seashore of the Baltic Sea. The area
consists of the big Olkiluoto island and many little islands and rocks in its vicinity. The
common biotopes near the seashore and in the archipelago are meadows, rocky shores,
black alder groves and colonies of Common Reed (Phragmites australis). The landscape
of the Olkiluoto inland area is characterized by commercial forests, rocky hills and
nutrient-richs, but mostly drained mires. The forest structure is dominated by the young
pine plantations and older spruce or broad-leaved forests.

The botanical and ecological inventories consist of combination of systematic grid
mapping and identification and demarcation the small areas of the conservation value.
The field survey was made for every grid unit (500 x 500 m). The systematic research
included inventories of vascular plants, biotopes and selected environmental factors.
Some key biotope patches with high conservation value were identified and located.
The birdlife was also inventoried in 1997.

Various applications of reserve selection algorithms were used as a tool for analysing
the data base. As a result of the analysis, every grid unit was classified according to the
importance for biodiversity at landscape ecological level (study area). After that,
ecological priority areas were identified. The selected areas represent the highest
diversity of vascular plants and biotopes in the study area.

No populations of nationally endangered plant species were found in the study area.
Some locally rare or otherwise notable vascular plant species were detected. Of the
polyporus , one species in need for monitoring on national level observed.

Many key biotope patches and other small areas with high conservation value were
identified and located. Most of them are seashore meadows with high species richness,
black alder forests, old growth forests and little islands. The most of the valuable areas
situated at the seashore.
