HYRKKÖLÄ

ABSTRACT

The Hyrkkölä U-Cu-mineralization is located in south-western Finland. A particular
feature is the existence of native copper associated with uraniferous pegmatite dikes. In
order to use the U-Cu-mineralization as a natural analogue for the copper canister the
groundwater chemistry associated with pegmatite dikes has to be characterised. The
purpose of the study initiated in 1997 is: 1) Comparison of the groundwater composition
in Hyrkkölä with the groudwaters of the candidate sites for spent fuel disposal
(Romuvaara, Kivetty, Olkiluoto, Hästholmen), 2) study of the possible secondary, low-
temperature alteration of metallic copper, especially if in contact with groundwater and
3) isotopic studies aiming at estimation of the age and timescale of the possible alteration
reactions.

As a part of the investigation programme Suomen Malmi Oy core drilled two boreholes
in Hyrkkölä in summer 1997. The identification numbers of boreholes are ovat
Y52/2024/97/324 and Y52/2024/97/325. The diameter of boreholes is 76 mm and the
diameter of the core is 62 mm. The depths of the boreholes are 100,25 m and 104,10 m.

A set of control measurements and the sampling of the flushing water were carried out
during the drilling. Both the volume of the flushing water and the returning water were
recorded as well as the waterlevel in the borehole. The objective of these measurements
was to obtain more information from bedrock and groundwater.

Uranine was used as a label agent in the flushing water. In the borehole
Y52/2024/97/324 the volume of the used flushing water was about 28 m³ and the volume
of the returning water was about 13 m³. At the end of the work the borehole was flushed
by pumping about 41 m³ of water from the bottom of the borehole. In the borehole
Y52/2024/97/325 the volume of the used flushing water was about 38 m³ and the volume
of the returning water was about 12 m³. At the end of the work the borehole was flushed
by pumping about 41 m³ of water from the bottom of the borehole.
