Sea Transportation
Spent nuclear fuel can also be transported from Loviisa to Olkiluoto by sea. Because of connecting traffic, the route for the sea transportation option also consists of a combination of different forms of transportation (road-sea-road).
Two optional routes have been inspected in the Gulf of Finland. An alternative to the route through the Archipelago is a route around the Ă…land Islands. The optional destination ports are Rauma or Olkiluoto. By combining these options, there will be a total of eight different ship routes to be inspected.
Sea transportation can be implemented using a ship such as the M/S Sigyn owned by SKB, a company responsible for nuclear waste management in Sweden. The M/S Sigyn has been specially constructed for the purpose of transporting spent nuclear fuel. The containers will be transported between the interim storage and the harbours using similar equipment as in the road option.
For the sea option, it will be possible to use the Valko port located in Loviisa about 25 km from the interim storage for spent nuclear fuel. In the Olkiluoto end, the port options are the port of Rauma or the ones owned by TVO at the plant site or on the Olkiluoto island. The use of the Olkiluoto port would require the port to be repaired.
