Posiva applies for decision in principle on final disposal of spent fuel from Olkiluoto 4
Posiva Oy has today submitted an application to the Finnish Government for a decision in principle on the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel from Olkiluoto 4 in Olkiluoto in the Municipality of Eurajoki. The application is part of the decision in principle process of Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO). TVO has today submitted an application for the construction of the fourth nuclear power plant unit in Olkiluoto.Posivas application for a decision in principle pertains to the extension of the final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel that Posiva is designing in Olkiluoto to accommodate also the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel from the Olkiluoto 4 plant unit planned by TVO. Posiva applies for a decision in principle to the effect that the extension of the final disposal facility is in line with the overall good of the society.
The Finnish Government has in 2000 and 2002 issued decisions in principle according to which the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel from the existing nuclear power plant units and from the Olkiluoto 3 unit under construction can take place in Olkiluoto in the Municipality of Eurajoki. The total amount of the spent nuclear fuel will be 6500 uranium tons.
"The extension of the final disposal facility for which the decision in principle is now applied for would cover also the spent nuclear fuel generated at Olkiluoto 4. In other words, the capacity of the final disposal facility will be increased to a maximum of 9000 uranium tons", explains Mr. Eero Patrakka, President of Posiva
