Third meeting of INAGO, INAGO-3

The third meeting of INAGO, INAGO-3, took place in June 2005 in Pori. The purpose of the meeting was mainly to examine the procedure known as Co-ordination of Engineering Design, Investigations and Construction (CEIC) for use in the ONKALO, to examine the integration of the research and the investigations in the ONKALO programme and to discuss and clarify the comments and recommendations made at the INAGO-2 meeting.

The developments in Posiva’s programme since the INAGO-2 meeting were outlined, including Posiva’s new organisational structure, the interaction there had been with STUK and the major reports that had been published. The status of the ONKALO programme was also presented – this included the state of the construction work, the investigations that are being carried out in parallel with the construction and the QA and CEIC procedures that are being employed. The members of INAGO were able to visit the ONKALO and see the underground construction and core logging activities.

A presentation was made of the Olkiluoto Site Description report, which represents the first in a series of such reports on the integration of the modelling activities, and contains the first set of predictions for the access tunnel.

An extensive discussion took place regarding the application of the CEIC procedure, including the experience of similar procedures in other waste management programmes. Another area of considerable discussion concerned the integration of research and investigations, in particular the use of investigation data to develop solute transport models and how this is linked to the development of the Safety Case.
The issues raised by INAGO at their previous meetings were also discussed – in some cases the issues have been resolved, whereas in others Posiva have specified the further work that is still required.

INAGO made a series of recommendations to Posiva regarding the use of the CEIC in the ONKALO, the way the investigations and research can best be co-ordinated with the construction activities, and how this might affect the management of the programme, and on the use of investigation data in the development of the Safety Case.
