Posiva Solutions to deliver expert services to Fennovoima

Posiva Solutions has agreed to provide Fennovoima with expert services related to the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. In its service business, Posiva Solutions will make use of the know-how and expertise of its parent company, Posiva. Posiva's know-how is the result of decades of research in the development of a responsible final disposal solution for the spent nuclear fuel generated in Posiva's owners' nuclear power plants in Olkiluoto and Loviisa.

Posiva's newly established subsidiary, Posiva Solutions Oy, will provide Fennovoima with expert services for the planning and developing of the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel of Hanhikivi nuclear power plant. The agreement covers technical expert services relating to the site selection of the final disposal site. The duration of the agreement now made is ten years, after which it is possible to separately agree on practical implementations of the following steps.

- It is great that a new company can set to business right away, and we get a domestic reference. In Finland, each nuclear power company is responsible for the final disposal of its spent nuclear fuel and related costs. It is our aim that with Posiva Solutions and its partners our customers will be able to develop their own safe final disposal solution in a faster and more cost-efficient way, meeting the high responsibility and safety standards of nuclear industry, Mika Pohjonen, Managing Director of Posiva Solutions, says.

- We are pleased about this significant service agreement, which enables the commercial use of Posiva's unique expertise and experience. The parent company Posiva continues to focus on constructing the final disposal facility for its owners' spent nuclear fuel generated in Olkiluoto and Loviisa. Taking care of TVO's and Fortum's nuclear waste management obligation is a large-scale and essential project for Posiva. The agreement between Posiva Solutions and Fennovoima does not affect this nor does it include disposal of Fennovoima's spent nuclear fuel in ONKALO, Posiva's President Janne Mokka says.

- In Finland, we have done responsible work in the development of the final disposal solution of spent nuclear fuel, and the way in which the final disposal is implemented is widely accepted. Now we can use our know-how for commercial business in Finland and other countries, Posiva's President Janne Mokka says.
