19.07.2011 ONKALO excavation continues through new contract signed by Destia and Posiva

The excavation of the ONKALO access tunnel, launched in 2004, was completed in June. Since spring 2010, Destia has been responsible for the ONKALO excavation contract, and Posiva has agreed on continuing the excavation with Destia. The new excavation contract covers the construction of rock facilities at ONKALO's technical level at the depth of 438 metres, for example.

21.03.2011 SKB submits a construction permit application for a final disposal facility

SKB submitted a construction permit application for a final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel to the Swedish authorities on 16 March 2011. The final disposal plant has been applied for for two locations with an intention to build an encapsulation facility in Oskarshamn and the underground repository in Östhammar. It is expected that the permit application will be processed so that construction may be launched in 2015 and final disposal in 2025.

When discussing final disposal of spent fuel, the question of marking it for the benefit of future generations is often raised. Should the final disposal site be marked? If so, how? There is also an ongoing discussion on whether future generations will be interested in today’s disposal project and spent fuel to an extent that would warrant an intrusion of the disposal facilities.

24.03.2010 Experts assembled for the TKS Seminar at the Finlandia Hall

Posiva’s research, development and planning work extending to year 2012 (the TKS-2009 programme) was presented to the company’s domestic and international partners at the Finlandia Hall on 10 March 2010. The TKS-2009 programme, finalised last autumn and submitted to the authorities, is a document with more than 500 pages describing the research, development and planning work central to the construction licence application for the disposal facility.

Part of the ventilation and hoisting equipment buildings of the ONKALO area will be constructed in the next few months. The construction work covers thousands of square metres.
