Application for the Decision-in-Principle on the Final Disposal of the Spent Nuclear Fuel from Loviisa 3
On 13 March 2009, Posiva submitted an application to the Government for a decision-in-principle for the final disposal of the spent nuclear fuel from Loviisa 3 in the Olkiluoto bedrock. The application for a decision-in-principle was accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment Report prepared last year.Disposing the spent nuclear fuel from Loviisa 3 would mean that the amount of waste would be increased to a maximum of 12,000 uranium tonnes. In practise this would mean that the amount of final disposal tunnels would increase and the ending of the final disposal activities would happen a few years later tha according to present plans.
The Ministry of Employment and the Economy announced the project in public and started the period for public hearing on 13 May 2009. The period for hearing ended on 15 July 2009. A public hearing meeting was organised during the said period on 16. June. Two standpoints were presented in the meeting. The presented standpoints will be brought to the Government’s attention.
