Application for the Decision-in-Principle on the Final Disposal of the Spent Nuclear Fuel from Olkiluoto 4
On 25 April 2008, Posiva submitted an application to the Government for a decision-in-principle for the final disposal of the spent nuclear fuel from Olkiluoto 4 in the Olkiluoto bedrock. The application for a decision-in-principle was accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment Report prepared in the late 1990s and an up-to-date account of the environmental impacts of the expansion of the final disposal facility.
The Ministry of Employment and the Economy announced the project in public and started the period for public hearing on 19 September 2008. The period for hearing ended on 19 November 2008. A public hearing meeting was organised during the said period at the Vuojoki Mansion on 22 November. Four standpoints were presented in the meeting. The presented standpoints will be brought to the Government’s attention.
15th of December 2008 the council of the Eurajoki municipality gave a positive statement of Posiva's decision-in-principle application on the Final Disposal of the Spent Nuclear Fuel from Olkiluoto 4. The statement was accepted unanimously.
Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority gave its preliminary safety assessment on June 2009. Radiation and Nuclear Safery Authority did not see any reason why the project can't move forward and the application process for the decision-in-principle will proceed so tha Government can now make its decision and the Parliament can ratify it.
