A Word from the President

Reijo Sundell muok
President Reijo Sundell, Posiva Oy
Posiva Oy was established in 1995 to manage the final disposal of the spent nuclear fuel produced by its owners, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj and Fortum Oy. The principles of responsible energy production require that the producer of the waste also takes care of its disposal in a safe and practical manner.

In 2001, the Olkiluoto island in Eurajoki was selected as the site for final disposal in a positive decision-in-principle issued by the Finnish parliament. Surveys were carried out in six localities.

After the decision was made, research focused on the safety of the disposal over the long term. When the surveys showed that the Olkiluoto bedrock and the selected disposal procedure meet the safety requirements, a construction permit application was submitted to the Ministry of Employment and the Economy in 2012. Construction work is expected to begin in 2015 after the permit has been granted; the facilities to be built will constitute the first disposal plant in the world.

The completion of all these efforts has required continued diligence, top expertise and an open attitude from all our staff. Pioneering multi-disciplinary research and development work has resulted in the creation of a final disposal method that will be the first of its kind in the world.

Posiva is currently in the process of moving its focus from research and development to the actual construction of the facilities and implementation of the disposal plans. This also means that new experts will be required for positions in new areas of operation.

I have worked in the nuclear industry for 38 years, and enjoyed every one of them. Posiva is an interesting place to work and able to offer stimulating challenges.

Reijo Sundell, President, Posiva Oy
