Safety Requirements

Safety of the final disposal is regulated by, among other directions, the Government act on the safety of final disposal and the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority guide on the long-term safety of disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

A detailed presentation of safety regulations is included in the YVL Guide 8.4, Long-term safety of disposal of spent nuclear fuel, published by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority. In these safety regulations, requirements are listed separately for the predictable period of time of the next thousands of years and for a longer period of time that contains some major climate changes. For the predictable period of time, 0.1 mSv has been set as the maximum annual radiation dose that can be inflicted on people by final disposal.
