Experimental pressure sealing plug (EPSP) ready for monitoring activities in Josef Gallery

Czech experiment EPSP is moving to the phase where its behaviour is assessed by the monitoring activities and the use of numerical analysis and modelling techniques.

The EPSP plug has been designed as a prototype plug for a future Czech deep geological repository. It is expected therefore that similar plug will function during the whole of the operational phase of the repository, i.e. 150 years with an expected over-pressure of up to 7MPa. The plug has been installed as a multilayer system consisting of two main structural elements which ensure the overall stability of the system, i.e. shotcrete wall and a sealing element - a bentonite section positioned between the shotcrete walls.

The plug will have the interface with surroundung host rock and modelling does shows that plug does tolerate expected pressures without cracking. Resealing with grouting will be done to ensure tight contact between rock and plug.
