Construction plan for Posiva’s canister insert gains STUK approval

12.12.2025

Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) has issued an approval decision on the construction plan of the cast iron insert of Posiva’s final disposal canister. With the decision, the manufacture of the cast iron inserts can be started; yet another important step towards encapsulation readiness.

The decision contained one requirement pertaining to the steel cover of the insert. According to Posiva’s Programme Manager Petri Koho, this issue can be dealt with as a document update before the manufacture of the steel covers begins.

- This is a significant accomplishment in Posiva’s canister project and the entire final disposal project. The qualification procedure of the cast iron insert has involved some challenges which have now been successfully resolved. Thanks go to all concerned.

Posiva’s goal is to start the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel from the five plant units of the company’s owners TVO and Fortum in 2026.
