A historic milestone: operating licence granted – watch our colleagues share their thoughts
The operating licence granted to Posiva on 22 October marked a significant milestone for the Finnish nuclear energy sector and for everyone who has worked to make safe final disposal a reality. We took a camera along and asked some of our colleagues at Posiva what this historic decision meant to them.
On 22 October 2026, the Finnish Government granted Posiva the world’s first operating licence for a spent nuclear fuel final disposal facility. The decision marked the culmination of decades of dedicated work and a new phase in Posiva’s journey towards the start of final disposal operations.
The decision was met with joy, pride and gratitude among our personnel. For many, it was a powerful demonstration of what long-term collaboration and an unwavering commitment to safety can achieve. In the accompanying video, colleagues at Posiva share in their own words how it felt to reach this historic milestone and what it means for the future.
