Posiva begins October with strong media attention

Posiva’s and ONKALO®’s progress towards the operational phase of spent nuclear fuel disposal is currently attracting widespread media interest both in Finland and around the world. Within a week, Posiva has been featured by several of the world’s best-known media outlets.

In the Financial Times video report Finland’s subterranean nuclear waste solution, published on 1 October, journalist Richard Milne visits ONKALO and explores how Finland is preparing to dispose of spent nuclear fuel deep in the Olkiluoto bedrock.

The Economist also turned its attention to Olkiluoto and published an article about Posiva on 1 October. It examines Finland’s solution to one of nuclear power’s most enduring questions and explains why Finland is set to become the first country in the world to move towards the operational geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

International interest is not limited to these two media outlets. The Wall Street Journal also prepared an article about Posiva and final disposal in September.

Not forgetting the Finnish media

The Finnish media have not forgotten us either. Tekniikan Maailma recently published an extensive and in-depth article about ONKALO and the practical implementation of final disposal. Among other topics, the article explains the technology used in final disposal and the types of operations required at a disposal facility located more than 400 metres underground. This article is also available in full to subscribers only.

In addition, a journalist from the regional newspaper Satakunnan Kansa visited ONKALO and the first disposal tunnels yesterday.

The interest shown by both international and Finnish media reflects the fact that Posiva’s work spanning more than 40 years is entering a globally unique phase. As the operating licence process progresses in Finland, the world is closely watching the transition from decades of research, design and construction towards practical final disposal operations.
