Posiva's encapsulation plant reaches halfway milestone – work has progressed in good cooperation
Posiva's encapsulation plant building in Olkiluoto has reached the halfway milestone, with the roof wetting ceremony celebrated in Olkiluoto today, 9 December 2021. Posiva Oy and Skanska Talonrakennus Oy signed the contract for the construction of the encapsulation plant for spent nuclear fuel in June 2019.
The encapsulation plant is abt. 11,500 square metres in floor area, and comprises some 17,500 cubic metres of reinforced concrete structures. The building has a volume of abt. 70,000 cubic metres. The estimated completion time of construction work and installation of building systems for the encapsulation plant is early summer 2022. So far, the total number of person-hours of work carried out on the worksite of the encapsulation plant has risen to almost 320,000.
- The construction stage has proceeded according to plan. Efforts were focused already at the time the contract was awarded on ensuring a high level of preparatory work as well as good cooperation between the contractor and the Client. These have been achieved successfully. Work has proceeded as planned and cooperation has been good the whole time, both at the office and on the worksite, Posiva's Construction Manager Juha Riihimäki is pleased to state.
Local resources have been utilised in the construction project extensively. In addition to the Satakunta Unit of Skanska Talonrakennus Oy and their subcontractors, Ilmastointi Salminen Oy and Vesi-Vasa Oy have carried out work related to building systems as Posiva's contractors. Sweco Oy is in charge of technical construction design, AFRY Finland Oy of electrical design and Elomatic Oy of the design of HVAC systems.
The encapsulation plant is part of Posiva's final disposal facility complex. In the encapsulation plant, the spent fuel elements are transferred into canisters made of copper and cast iron. The construction stage will be followed by the installation and commissioning of the process systems of the encapsulation plant.
