Posiva received a disposal hole drilling rig in Olkiluoto
The DHBM drilling rig for the actual disposal holes coming to Posiva's ONKALO® has arrived in Olkiluoto from Germany and has been received. This is the largest device coming to ONKALO. The transport arrived as a special transport from Helsinki on Monday, June 20th.
The truck was unloaded in Olkiluoto on Tuesday, June 21st. It started moving down to ONKALO on the evening of June 22nd. The drill ride to the bottom of ONKALO in the storage hall takes about a day.
The disposal hole drilling rig supplied by the German equipment manufacturer Herrenknecht AG represents the first production unit in Posiva's equipment program. Its planning started in the spring of 2020 and was completed ahead of schedule despite the corona pandemic. Delivery of equipment for the manufacture of sub-components progressed in the spring of 2021. The equipment was completed in the same year and continued ahead of schedule for factory testing.
The design and manufacture of the disposal hole drilling rig is a significant step in Posiva's EKA project and preparation for production. During the autumn and early winter of 2022, Herrenknecht will carry out tests for the drilling of disposal holes in accordance with the concept and requirements for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
The drilling rig bearing the Aava name is 9.13 meters long, 3.15 meters wide and weighs a total of 78 tonnes. The height of the German beauty is 3.93 meters. The drilling rig complex also includes a 7-meter and 22-tonne energy unit and a 4.1-meter-high and 18.5-tonne drill processing plant.
